﷯Hi, my name is April!

I am an Illustrator based in Newcastle, Australia. I have been in love with drawing my whole life so I decided to pursue it as my career. In 2015 I completed a Bachelor of Natural History Illustration,Honours Class 1 and was awarded the Faculty Medal from the University of Newcastle (UoN). More recently I had the pleasure of creating prints commissioned by the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment (UoN). The prints have been given by the Faculty as to visitors to the University as well as to international partners when travelling overseas. I am currently awaiting the publication of "Flora of the Hunter Region – Endemic Species", which my artwork is featured, I am incredibly excited to see my artwork published! I was previously involved with Octopus Ink Illustration Collective, a Renew Newcastle initiative founded by five University alumni. I collaborated with a fellow Octopus Inker, for our Travelling Birds: Migration Narrative exhibition, held at Watt Space Gallery, March 2-20 2016. Other 2016 exhibitions include the Endangered and Extinct show at Maitland Regional Art Gallery.

Throughout my degree I gained invaluable illustration techniques and skills necessary to produce high quality and accurate illustrations. These skills can be applied across a range of areas in illustration from scientific to conceptual illustrations. I believe that truly having a strong understanding of a subject allows me abstract the imagery as I please. Whether the goal is super-realistic or cartoon-like. One of my lecturers once told me:
"Once you can draw everything, then you can draw anything".
I'd say that's my philosophy of drawing. I use a variety of media to execute my illustrations, I particularly enjoy watercolour painting. I also use coloured pencil, pen and ink, Copic markers, gouache and I have a love for anything digital, such as Photoshop and Corel Painter. I endeavour to translate traditional techniques into a digital form, using what I know works on paper and applying that technique to the computer. I also dabble in photography, mostly for referential purposes but I have been commissioned for engagement photos and posters in the past. I am inspired by all things natural, particularly native Australian plants and animals. I also take inspiration from Japan, having lived abroad there for a year. I also enjoy watching cute animal videos, playing boardgames and drinking coffee with fine company. [ april, 28, illustrator/nerd ]
